Wellness Wednesday: Back to Weight Watchers

Well hello there 2017, and hello there Wellness Wednesday. Since one of my goals for this year is to expand my blog, what better way to open things up with how I first got started. I'm excited to return to blogging regularly.

I'm also excited to share that thanks to some extra motivation from my SPAs (sweat pink ambassadors) I am empowered to rejoin Weight Watchers.

I first joined weight watchers after the birth of my second child. Along with nursing I lost about 20 pounds fairly easily. Sadly I've sort of plateaued since then, and would like to lose another 20.

Yesterday was my first official day back on the program, and I proudly stayed within my recommend point range. The best part was I didn't feel deprived, and even felt more energetic. The only downside is that my bathroom scale is broke so I'll need to purchase a new one, but in the meantime I just use my most recent weight.

Are you or have you tried the Weight Watchers program? What are you empowered to tackle in 2017?

Do YOU Boo!

A few weeks ago I stumbled across this image on social media. Whenever I find something that I can relate to, I save it to my phone. Sometimes I site the source and post it to my personal page. Most times I forget all about it, until I need to clear out some phone space. This one was different. It really resonated with me.

Then I was having a convo at work about upcoming races. This was slightly after I ran BRF. Those who knew I was running, asked about my race and congratulated me. There were a few people who were shocked. Conversations with two people really rubbed me the wrong way, and I just kept coming back to this message.

Of course it was the comparison to the other runner. Who might I add totally rocked the race. She's a Boston Qualifier and runs a sub 8 min/mile. Then it was "oh wait you did the half? I didn't even know you ran." Another chimed in "OMG you're a marathon runner?!?! I can't believe I didn't know. I won't get into the nitty gritty because all of that is besides the point.

My point is yes I am health conscious.  Yes I do go to the gym, and try to watch what I eat (oh I also got "wow you've been eating a lot of salad lately." ) Yes I am a runner. I'm also overweight (okay obese by some standards). I don't look like a "runner or a yogi." I look like ME. I'm also a working wife and mother of two. I have two degrees in Exercise Science and have been a certified personal trainer for seven years. My journey started in October 2012. I'm not where I want to be, but I'm not where I was either. That's doesn't make me any less of anything. You don't have to fit the ideal prototype to live a healthy lifestyle.

Comparison is the thief of joy. I think now with social media, the comparisons are 100 times worse. Just think of the countless times we look at a friend's page (or a complete stranger) and begin comparing. So what. Everything that appears to be perfect is not. You don't know what someone endured or is currently enduring that got them to this point. Focus on you. Set your own goals. Document your journey. Have fun! Enjoy the process. At the end of the day,  All you have to do is DO YOU BOO!

More than a Number

I get it. We all have been there. The daily weigh-in. It's the most dreaded, rewarding ten seconds of your day. You step on the scale. Say a quick prayer, and then look down. It's staring back at you. Let me guess,  not what you were hoping (or prayer) for. Right?!

Insert the immediate guilt trip. If only you didn't have that piece of cake at the office baby shower yesterday. Oh and Tuesday was hectic with work and picking up the kids from school, so you skipped you workout. There's a million and one should've could've would've racing through your head. All the while that stupid, freaking number won't stop glaring back at you.

How do I know? Trust me been there done that. For some this is an everyday reality. Others it maybe a weekly check-in. Then there's your current number, goal number, starting number. Excuse me for forgetting the "old me" number  versus society says I should be this number. Bull crap!

F them all. That's what I finally told myself weeks ago. Matter fact it's been months. I said the heck with it. It took sometime, but I have to say I don't miss it. It wasn't intentional. I would normally weigh in every Sunday, and record it in MyFitnessPal. Sometime back in the summer the battery in my scale died. Nine volts are uncommon so I didn't have any in my house. That's about all she wrote.

I'm happier with out it. My focus now is just moving more and eating better. Yeah really that's it. Will it take me forever and a day to get to where I'm comfortable with myself? Probably but who cares.

I'm much more confident without it. I don't miss that feeling of failure. I feel a lighter and that's even with being bloated right now (darn PMS) . My waist feels smaller and pants I brought at the beginning of the year have more room.

It may not work for everyone but right now it's working for ME! Again the best part is the piece of mind. I don't want to be just a number for the rest of my life. I'm so much more. I'm not saying I don't care about it either. It's just at this moment and time I'm focused on something so much more than a number.

June Goals

Is 2016 just flying on by or what? I still can't believe we're halfway through the year already. More so I don't want to believe it.

I was supposed to be 10 pounds lighter by this time, but yeah...not going to happen. Same ol' broken love weight song. No one wants to hear the excuses, so I'll just skip the BS, and get to what I'm going to try and do about it.

June Goals:
1. More H20....so yeah drinking half your bodyweight ( approximately 5-6 water bottles)

2. More veggies (3-5 servings a day)

3. Limit sugar

4. Limit carbs

5. At least 3 workouts a week

6. Lose 5 pounds

Confessions of an Emotional Eater

My name is LaToya, and I'm an emotional eater. Everyone say hi LaToya. Woo-sah, so glad I got that off my chest. After all the first step when you have a problem, is admitting it- right? Before I going into how I plan on dealing with said problem, let's back track to when and how it started.
About 6 weeks before my first pregnancy

For the most part of the my life, I've been mostly healthy and petite. I pretty much ate what I wanted when I wanted it. I even was fairly active; whether it was a home workout video or going for a leisurely walk. My weight matched my 5'0 fame proportionately with textbook BMI numbers. I worked four years in the health/fitness industry. Insert pregnancy #1, marriage,  pregnancy #2, and job loss within about a 18 month timespan, and I was 65 pounds heavier. I masked many of these joyous life changing events with food. When things didn't return to "normal," I ate more and more. Distancing myself from family and friends, I self diagnosed myself with postpartum depression, and again turned to food.

Reflecting on things today, I haven't returned to my pre-pregnancy because I had two babies (2010 +40, 2011 +25). I haven't returned to my pre-pregnancy because I am an emotional eater. I notice if I'm bored (mostly at home) or having a bad day I eat. Not only do I eat, but I consume some pretty unhealthy foods. Oh, and don't let it be close to that time of the month, because I get the munchies something serious.
200-170s

So after nearly four years, since my last my last pregnancy I'm no longer masking my weight gain. It's kind of hard to do when you have one preschooler and another school-age child. The other day after a long, hard look in the mirror I said to myself honey this is no longer baby weight, this is a result of you letting your emotions get the best of you.

Now that I've gotten past the anger, denial, and admittance stages I think I'm ready to do something about it. My mission is pretty simple, lose weight or die trying'. The first thirty pounds that I lost, and kept off for three years that was solely baby weight, but these last 30-35 will take work. Here's my tentative action plan:
  • 30 minutes physical activity 5-6 days/week
  • 2-3 liters of water daily
  • add more fruit & veggies to my diet (at least one with each meal/snack)
  • 5-6 small meals/snack daily
  • cut back on eating out 1-2 meals/week
Are you an emotional eater? How did you overcome it? What advice do you have for other busy mothers looking to curb emotional eating?

Be Well,

I Feel….Fat Tuesday

After waking this morning, I had a few moments to spare before getting the kids together. So of course I grabbed my phone and jump on Instagram. My "searchables" are filled with Transformation Tuesday pics, and then my mind went zero to one hundred real quick. After a few quick looks in the mirror while getting dressed, I suddenly felt saddened. I'm not satisfied with my results. My tummy isn't flat enough. My arms look flabby. The list goes on…… nonetheless as I'm standing in front of my full body mirror in walks two little people, who confirm my thoughts.

"Eww mommy needs to workout more." Yeah "like push-ups" said my kids. I quickly finished getting ready, and continued with my normal day-to-day activities. All the while, all I can think about was how god awful i look and feel. Why am I not back to my pre-preganancy weight by now? My body will never be the same.

January 2012 190's

Rewind to my days before motherhood. I was young, single, had a blossoming career, and my weight fluctuated around 131-136. During my first pregnancy (April 2010) I gained approximately 40 pounds. I went back to work almost immediately. The first ten pounds came off easy. I was back work to managing a wellness center for a federal government agency, teaching 5-6 classes a week and doing Insanity at home. Life was grand. Before what seemed like a blink of an eye, I had a birth control mishap and was pregnant again. I birthed my second child in December 2011, and with this pregnancy put on another 20-25 pounds. I don't remember my exact weight, but recall one of my last few appointments the medical assistant weighting me in at 191. I then shut out my weigh-ins those last few appointments.

I suffered postpartum depression with both pregnancies. I was miserable to say the least. October 2012 at 178, I joined Black Girls Run! with hopes of getting back to the "old me."
Circa January 2012 190's
As of last week I'm at 161 and while I'm the smallest I've been in three years and have lost roughly 30 pounds, when I look in the mirror I still see the girl pictured above. Miserable, lonely, depressed, insecure, stressed, unpretty….are some of the words I would use to describe my self. I turned to food and my husband's baggy sweatpants. I hid myself from family and friends sabotaging many relationships.

I know I've come a long way, and have an even longer way to go to reach my goals, but at the moment I feel…..FAT

Are you or have you struggled with "fat" days? How do you cope? Ugh it's going to be a long day.

Be Well,

LaToya

Wellness Wednesday: Non-scale Victory!

Its been weeks since I've hopped on the scale. Just a few moments ago, I walked past my few length mirror and noticed major room in fanny. Sorry in advance for no pic, but I'm the worse at selfies (especially full body shots). I've also noticed changes in my waist at my belt loop keeps going in. All in all, I'm uber excited!

It's almost hard to put into words, but let's just say I have enough room back there than I grasp more than a handful….of my jeans that is. Okay, TMI I get it, but after all this is my site, and I'm proud of the  progress I'm making. As for the belt, I probably could go down a size on that as well.

I'm not where I used to be, not where I want to be but progress is progress and it doesn't have to be all about that number on the scale. Pre pregnancy I was a 6, at my heaviest i was a 14, and right now I'm in a size 12 jeans. My plan is to just keep active, aim to burn 400-500 calories 4x a week, and keep my caloric intake between 1200-1500 daily.

Have an awesome Wellness Wednesday peeps!

XOXO,

late

Wellness Wednesday: New Regimen

It's a slow day at work, and since I've have no clients or challenges to work it I'm focusing on myself. I have 72 days & 10 hours for my Project 30 deadline, and I'm 22 pounds away from my goal.

Here's how I plan to meet it. Let's start with the easy part first: my weekly fitness regimen.

Sunday: Run; this will likely be a local route in my neighborhood.

Monday: Cardio 40-60 minutes followed by strength training.

Tuesday: Run 25-40 minutes using the Galloway Training.

Wedenesday: 30 minute Core Circuit and either a 30 minute Yoga or Pilates video.

Thursday: Same as Monday.

Friday: Hooray for rest day! Although I do hope to try out a hot yoga class that's offered since I'm usually off.

Saturday: Long Run

Piece of cake! Now if I'm serious about my Project 30 goal, I'll need to be diligent with my eating habits. That means eating mostly clean meals, limiting dining out, meal prepping, logging in to myfitnesspal, and keeping a strict eye on my calories. My caloric range will vary from 1200-1500 depending on my level of activity.

 Let's the games begin!

I am what I eat.....

Coming off a great convo with a client this morning, I was prompted to write a post. This past weekend, I wrapped up a four-week nutrition program. The program developed by Dr. Ian Smith, is the Super Shread. Over the past few weeks I lost eight pounds, and although, I did not measure inches I can tell the difference in my clothing (mainly in the waist and thigh areas). Yes, ladies no more thunder thighs! While on this program, I also exercised 5-6 days each week. Completing a combination of activities: walking, running, weight training, biking, P90X3, using the elliptical. Physical activity has never been an issue of mine, it's the nutriton thing that has haulted me from returning from to my pre-pregnancy weight/ size. To back track just a bit.....I birthed two children within eightmonths that results in a 65 pound weight gain. When I went in for my last ob appointment days before having my youngest, I tipped the scales in the 190's. Currently, I'm 165. Hitting my target weight range (132-138) has been a struggle to say the least. I can think of a million and one excuses, but at the end of the day I no it all boils down to nutrition (or lack their off). As a fitness professional, I know more than some that you cannot out train a bad diet, but for the past 2. 5 years that hasn't been enough to curtail bad habits. Youth is no longer on myside (well not as much) I can longer eat like a college student nor can my waistline stand to "wining and dining" my husband and I did when we were dating. So, the Super Shred program works for me. It keeps me accountable. Taking it one day at a time, I am working on meal planning and meal prepping. After all, if I want life-long results and habits for me, and my family it starts in the kitchen. Fingers & toes crossed that I can continue to make progress in the right direction....after all I am what I eat (good or bad)

Me, home on a Saturday?!

Today is the third consecutive Saturday, that instead of my alarm waking me up at zero dark thirty for my weekly group run, I slept in and was awoken by the little ones. Of course it's nice getting a little extra family time in, but it's weird not running. Plus, I miss my Saturday am run crew. I did start my day off with a 30 minute Tae Bo video. Something is always better than nothing right?

Granted I run by myself during the week, my Saturday group runs are something I've always looked forward too. It's great to have that extra push and accountability. I'm hoping tomorrow to meet up with my local BGR! Chapter. Emphasis on hoping. Since I'm not training my motivation has declined because it seems pretty pointless to drive 20-30 minutes for a short run. I guess we'll see.

In other news I'm down 2.6 pounds since my husband's new work schedule. This week was definitely better than the first. The kids and I have settled into our weekly routines, and I've been preparing all our meals and lunches at home. Last night, was the first night all week we ate out. McDonalds for them and a i swung by a local spot for a salad. Fingers crossed I can keep this up. Also, instead of beating myself up about my 30 by 30 goal, I've decided to focus on smaller milestones. With that said, my next target is 160. Currently I'm 164.8

Have a happy, healthy weekend!

Super Shred

Happy Wellness Wednesday! Today is Week 2, Day 2 since I started the Super Shred: The Big Results Plan. For those that are unfamiliar with Super Shred, this program was created by Dr. Ian Smith. I first discovered Dr. Ian in the early 2000's on VH1's Celebrity Fit Club. Currently he is featured on the The Doctors daytime talk/ reality show.

Super Shred is a four week meal plan that focuses on meal spacing, snacking, meal replacement, diet confusion, and living an active lifestyle. I purchased the online ibook via the App Store for $9.99. The book contains instructions for the meal plan, over 50 receipts for meals, and snacks, and information regarding physical activity. Super Shred is the the follow-up to Dr. Ian's Shred plan, and average weight loss for participants following the program is 20 pounds in 4 weeks.

After losing 35 pounds of my baby weight, I've struggled to lost the remaining 30 pounds, and am looking to the program to better improve my eating habits. My weight loss goal is 30 pounds by my 30th birthday (November 1). Based on what I know professionally, and through reading the book, I am not expecting to lose the 20 pounds in 4 weeks since I have a smaller (compared to others) amount of weight to lose. I do however desire to lose 1-1.5 pounds each week.

First Week:

The first week was an introduction to the program. Meals were spaced 3-4 hours apart, and snacks were 90 minutes apart. With a few exceptions, I followed the daily meal plan to a t. I began the week with shopping for the items the book said I would need for my meals the first week. I also stuck with the exercise regimen which included a minimum of three 40-minute cardio sessions.

The hardest day of the week 1, was day 4. Day 4 was "shredder day" also known by many as liquid meal day. It was hard not consuming solids mentally, but i prepared everything as outlined in the book.

Aside from the two 150-calories or less snacks, I had a protein shake, soup, and fresh juice for the day.

My total weight loss was only a 1/2 pound. Once again I did great during the week, then jumped ship on Saturday when my family went out to dinner.

Week 2:
Right now I'm on the "accelerate" week. Timing and spacing of the meals this week are different that week 1. Below is the suggested timeline (you can alter the times)

  • 7:30 a.m. wake-up
  • 8:30 a.m. meal 1
  • 10:00 a.m. snack 1
  • 12:30 p.m. meal 2
  • 5:00 p.m. meal 3
  • 8:00 p.m. snack 2
Meal/ snack options vary day-to-day, but the aforementioned timing remains the same. As with the first week, a weekly grocery list was provided. You can only weigh yourself once a week (which I do anyway). One cup of water must be drunk before each meal/ snack, and program provides other tips such as meal substitutes and again regular physical activity.

I'm hoping for better results than last week, but I know the ball is in my court. Anyone else like to share their review of Super Shred or any of Dr. Ian's programs?

One step forward, two steps back...

Confession time, I've fallen way off the wagon and I cannot blame anyone besides myself. My eating has been horrendous the last week or so.

It all started July 4th weekend. I had relatives in town, and they flooded my house with snacks, snacks, and more snacks. On top of this my mother has a catering business, so aside from eating out once she prepared some delicious meal. All of which I could not resist.

I ate and nibbled on foods that I typically do not have, let alone even keep in my house. Twizzlers, Swedish fish, potato chips, cookies, soda, etc. One top of all of this we went to Six Flags one day....so yes I had a hamburger w/ fries and a about three quarters if a funnel cake.

I did get up and run and do a P90x3 workout one morning, and tried to convince myself that the walking in the amusement park would burn some extra calories. Clearly that wasn't the case.

I called myself doing a clean sweep when they left Monday morning. I ate fairly well; having just cereal for breakfast and salads for lunch. My domino effect began Wednesday. My day started off bad with the kids, I had a mommy meltdown after work, and my husband and I had Chinese for dinner. Man oh man was it good.

That was just the icing on the cake. I skipped three straight days of P90x3 and walked on the treadmill. Yesterday was my day off and what did I do....nothing! Left over Chinese food, a Cinnabon & a slurpee because I took the kids to free 7-11 day.

Welp I gained back 3 of the 7 pounds I had lost. This is my usual cycle. I work hard, begin to see a little progress, gain some confidence, and the scale goes back up. Fingers crossed that this is the last time this happens.

To be continued....

Wellness Wednesday: 80/20 Rule?

Welp its hump day, and time for my weekly Wellness Wednesday. I've beeen brainstorming since yesterday about what I was going to write about, and really still do not know. Let me apologize in advance if this post makes absolutely no sense. I'm just going to vent a little, and share what's on my mind. Inspired by a friend's facebook post, along with the recent Dr. Oz debale really has this mind of mine ticking. As we all know there is a ton of information out there regarding weight loss. Most of which is myths, and people just simply putting it out there because of monetary gains. Sad, right? As a health/fitness professional is upsetting, and often times makes my job diffiult because everyone wants that "quick fix." These potions, pills, and creams make claims that are nine out of ten times just down right WRONG! No one wants to work hard anymore, yet everyone wants results yesterday. In the latest "claim to fitness shame" scam reknown Dr. Oz has admitted publicly that many of the products he advertisies do not have any proven scitentific backing. Translation this man has been marketing products that he knew would not help people, all for money. I don't want to spend a whole lot of time discussing him, but goole it and do your own research. This is one of many example of why I follow and educate my clients on the 80/20 rule. What do I mean? 80% of the time focus on the good, 20% of the time focus on the not so good. For me that mean, most days of the week I workout, eat healthy, get a good night's rest and on occassions I'll indulge in some not so healthy behaviors. I think those who say I'm giving up this or cutting that are only setting themselves up for failure. Why limit or restrict ourselves? If I want a hamburger, I'm going to have a hamburger. That doesn't mean I'm driving thru every fast food franchise seven days a week. If I'm having a bad day and don't feel like working out, I don't work out. One bad meal or skipped workout will not ultimately make or break my progress; however, four or five will do. The 80/20 rule is all about moderation and living life to the fullest. If you've visited my page before, you know I'm a wife, mother, and personal trainer. I'm also 20 pounds overweight, but I don't make any excuses. The weight that I haven't loss yet isn't a result of two pregnancies in eighteen months, but it is a result of overeating and lack of physical activity. With the 80/20 rule, I'm probably more healthier now than I was five years ago wearing a size 0. Yes, I was active but I ate like crap. Instead of spending my time and money purchasing these products that claim you'll drop 25 pounds in 25 days, I spend my time and money purchasing real food. I'm making progress, not striving for perfection. What are your thoughts on the 80/20 rule?

For the fun of it....

Top of the morning (well middle for me), and I have few extra minutes to spare. I thought I would share how I'm doing with running for the fun of it as opposed to running to train for a race. Corny as this may sound but I'm LOVING IT (cues McDonald's commerical music). So glad, I've rediscovered my joy for running. I enjoyed the time I spent training and racing, but just getting out there and running is what I truly love. I have even ditched the garmin, and not been focusing as much on my pace. Who would of guess I'm getting faster, and becoming an overall better runner. This past weekend, I went out with BGR! and ran the Centennial loop. That was the first time ever I ran 2.5 miles non-stop. I was on cloud nine for the rest of the weekend. I met a new BGR! member who had been training for Baltimore Women's Classic. Orginially we both said we would be doing intervals, and somehow, someway we managed to keep a steady breath, conversation, and pace throughtout the entire course. We both jumped for joy, and ended the run with laughs and hug; not realizing that this was the first time either of us had run that distance without stopping before. Definitely a moment, I won't forget, and another reason why I love Black Girl RUN! I also caught back up with my B-more Run Buddies via our faceback page, and am looking forward to reuniting with them as well. Aside from that, I have just been trying to move more & eat less. Today marks week 2, day 8 of P90x3. I'm enjoying the program thus far. The 30 minute workouts are great because I can still get my mileage in. Mileage wise I'm aiming for 3-5 miles day, alternating walking and running every other day. As for my nutrition, well the usual up & down battle. One thing I can give myself credit for is consistently logging everything into MyFitnessPal, and staying within my alloted calories most day of week. Keyword MOST, as this was Father's Day weekend! On a personal note, I'm wrapping up a 60-day weight loss challenge with my clients at work. Overall the feedback has been great, and so far the group has lost about 86 pounds. Things are also great at home. I had a great weekend with my husband, my daughter is doing an excellent job with potty training and received her first pair of panties, and my son is nothing short of amazing.

#Wellness Wednesday: National Running Day

Happy Wellness Wednesday! Since today is  National Running Day, I've decided to share my 5W's and 1H about my running journey:

Who: Well me of course! As for running groups, I am a proud member of Black Girl RUN!, W.E. Run!, Baltimore Road Runners, and I'm also Half Fanatic #7854.

What I like/dislike about running: What I enjoy most about running is the endorphin release I get from it. Trust there are plenty of days where I don't feel like it, but I get out there anyway. I also like being around like-minded people, making new friends, and pushing my body to limits that my mind didn't think I could pass.

What I dislike about running is a tough one! I guess I dislike running when I lose my "mojo." This has happened two or three times, and I think it correlates to overtraining. After my first half marathon and after my half-fanactic status (3 races in less than 40 days) I disliked running. Nothing a few days of rest and spending time with the family can't cure.

When do I run: I'm an earlier riser so I prefer to run first thing in the morning. That always is not the case. Although yesterday I had about 30-40 minutes while my husband was in between jobs so I ran my neighborhood for the first time since we moved here in November. Aside from that, I try to run two short runs a week (normally mid-day after dropping off the kids or at work) and one longer weekend run (normally either saturday or sundays sometimes both if I'm half marathon training).

Where do I run: I run wherever the winds blows me! In my neighborhood, at a local park/ lake, in the city, and sometimes out of town if I'm racing. Oh and let me not forget the dreaded track and treadmill runs; both of which I ran quite frequently this winter.

Why do I run: I run for a number of reasons: my sanity, to de-stress, to be a better wife & mother, for weight loss/ maintenance, preventative diseases, because it feels good, to get my sexy back….the list goes on!

How do I run: I run like a turtle stampeding through peanut butter, but I run! How I run varies. Some runs are better than others. Some days my focus is time, other days my focus is distance but I run. Somedays I run intervals (Jeff Galloway method), somedays I run until I can't run anymore.

When I first started running I was averaging 16+ min/miles and could barely run 30 seconds with the C25k app. Now I'm averaging 12-13 min/miles.

Here's a few quick facts about me & running:

  • First Run: August or September 2012
  • First Race: October 2012 Junior League of Baltimore Commit to Fit 5k
  • First Running Shoes: Just some cute Nike's my mom brought from Kohl's
  • Favorite Race Distance: 10k
  • First Half-Marathon: Zooma Annapolis 2013
  • Favorite Running Shoes: Asicis Gel Tri-Noosa
  • Must Have Run Items: Lipgloss and my Nike featherweight cap
My advice to beginners or those thinking about running:

Like the Nike slogan "JUST DO IT!" Seriously though! Give it a shot, you'll be surprised how it will change your life. Give it 30 days. If you enjoy it get fitted for shoes, buy a good sports bra, continue to lace up!

A Look Back...

While tweeting with one of my favorite running mentors (Lisa), it dawned on me how far I've come in the past year. This weekend is a year to the date that I ran my first half marathon: Zooma Annapolis. I had the pleasure of being one of five Muscle Milk Light Challenge Athletes, and underwent a training program sponsored by Charm City Run. To be part of the program, I first had to apply and underwent a telephone interview before being selected.

I remember the day I received the call that I had been selected for the training program like it was yesterday. Naturally I had a mix of emotions. In the days before my first group run, I emailed the program director expressing my uneasiness with completing 13.1 miles. She gave me some great advice, and told me to take the weekend to think these over. Of course I was nervous about the both the training and the race, but I was more so concerned with the date of the race being on my brother's high school graduation. I talked things over with my husband, and then reached out to my brother. Both gave me their full support, and I knew it was no turning back. I was 100% committed, and would not  quit.
This pic is my first solo 9.5 mile run

A week later was my first training run at the Charm City Annapolis store. We ran an out-and-back 5 mile course, and returned to the store for some post-run fellowship. Some of the Zooma Ambassadors were there, as well as the other challenge athletes. We were greeted with bagels, fruit, mimosas, muscle milk light samples, and our official Zooma training shirts. I remember each of us sharing stories, and making plans to communicate regularly throughout the program. I was partnered with Lisa as my mentor/coach and was emailed a training program for the next 10 weeks. Surprisingly training wasn't that bad. I completed my short runs alone, and my long runs I either linked up with my local BGR! group or on some occasions I trained with the other challenge athletes.

Zooma did an excellent job communicating via their website & other social media sites! I really loved their time-ticker.

About two weeks out from race day, we did  a 10 mile course preview. Once again the group shared many laughs, hugs, and even tears. It was hard to imagine that less than three months ago, we were all strangers and how close we had grown in such short amount of time. It was also pretty cool to see the growth in all of us. We met up once more the night before the race at the packet-pick-up/ mocktail party sponsored by Honest Tea. I didn't stay long because I was eager to get home, and get ready for race day. Here's a pic of my flat runner:

Race day was a hot, humid June 1, 2013. I woke up in the wee hours of the morning to make the 45-50 minute drive to Annapolis. Definitely a bittersweet moment. Pre-race was great meeting and greeting fellow BGR! members, and the last words of encouragement from my run mentors.

I really don't remember too many details from the course. I know it was scenic, great crowd support, and I started out way to fast the first 10k. I also remember running into an old co-worker, and a few of the other challengers. My goal was to finish the race smiling within the 3.5 course limit, and I did just that. As a matter of fact, I remember turning the bend into the Navy Yard stadium and some of the coaches yelling, keep running don't stop now. I remember looking at my watch and saying I'm not last, I can walk now!

Overall a great first half marathon experience. From the training until I crossed that finish line and received my medals it was awesome! Whenever I encounter someone asking about Zooma Women's Race Series, I always have positive vibes about the race. I look forward to returning to Annapolis or another location in 2015. Oh and dare me not to mention, that Zooma has that best swag. I still use my handy tote bag, water bottle, and wear the necklace.

Since that date, I have completed three more half marathons, making me half fanatic #7854. I'm down two sizes (still not at my pre-pregnancy size). Also was an 2014 Ambassador for the St. Michael's Running Festival, started this blog, and am now a sweat pink ambassador.

The best is yet to come! Shout-out everyone participating in this year's Zooma Annapolis Half Marathon & 10K!

Vi-Shape Review

Off and on for the past 2-3 months I've been using the ViSalus ViShape. ViShape is a nutritional supplement that according to its website has the following benefits:

  • helps build lean muscle
  • full serving of fiber
  • low fat
  • low sodium
  • low sugar
  • lower carb than other brands
  • lactose and gluten-free
  • includes calcium for bone health
  • contain heart-healthy protein
  • Certified OU kosher
  • 25 vitamins & minerals
  • and MORE!
The shake which comes in a delicious sweet cream flavor, tastes exactly like it's advertised: The Shake Mix That Tastes Like a Cake Mix. Some of it's biggest competitor's are BeachBody's Shakeology and the Total Lean line sold by GNC. I've tried both products, and didn't care for either. With both Total Lean and Shakeology, I didn't like the taste nor the price. ViShape is affordable, and delicious.

I typically have a ViShape for breakfast. My favorite ViShape recipe is to blend the product with fresh/frozen fruit, 2-3 ice cubes, and one cup of unsweetened almond milk. Depending on my mood and schedule, I'll sometimes add in green, leafy vegetables (spinach or kale) , yogurt (low-fat or greek), or coconut water. It's also a great grab-an-go option, and sometimes I can just run out the door with two scoops in a blender bottle and later add spring water.

ViShape is also advertised as a weight loss/ weight management supplement. For those looking for weight loss, it is recommended to replace two meals with the mix. For those looking for weight maintenance, it is recommended to replace one meal with the mix. Again, I tend to use the product to replace my breakfast, and as a healthy grab-an-go option if I'm out running errands. In both scenarios, what I enjoy most is the taste, convenience, cost, and best of all it's a lot healthier than hitting up a drive- thru.

I'm not a distributor of the product, nor have I signed-up for the 90-day challenges associated with it, I simple just love it! For more info on ViShape and the other nutritional products ViSalus offers visit them on the web at: http://visalus.com/products/vi-shape

Non-scale Victory

Someone just pointed out how huge my pants look, so I thought I would share my little non-scale victory. Yes I'm offically down 3 pants sizes since I gave birth to my youngest in December 2011. I still have a long way to go to get back into my pre-baby size 6 (currently a 10), but hey progress is progress! Non-scale victories are a great way to keep one motivated and inspired on thier wellness journies. Since we all have different stories and goals, it's a great way for me to plan programs for clients (and myself). For someone looking to shed weight non-scale victories may include working out consistently for 21 days straight, getting into your favorite dress/pants, setting a personal record in a race. The list goes on! Any victory should also be celebrated. Ideally without food, but trust I get it every now and again you should indulge. Some of my favorite treats to myself are: new workout gear, mani/pedi, a massage, race fee! Thanks for reading my #Testimony Tuesday non-scale victory posting! Best of Health, LaToya
