I've always been team relaxer, but my new stylist convinced me that years of chemically processed hair was doing some major damage and if I kept it up I would be bald. Talk about wake up call! She gave me a quick run down on natural vs relaxed, and promised if I gave her a one year my hair would be in its best condition ever. So I gave in! Mind you before I was anti weave, anti natural because there was no way in hell I was chopping off my hair, and extensions are just to darn expensive. I was all the way team creamy crack and free flowing tresses.
Thus far my transition to natural with no chop involves regular maintenance. I have to make sure I moisturize daily, and cannot skip on wrapping my hair before bed. I also visit my stylist about every 10-14 days for a deep condition and dominican wash, set, and blow-out. My ends are clipped every four to six weeks, to prevent breakage and cut off the relaxer slowly. In between salon visits, I try to limit using my flat iron to 2-3 times a week. Again this means me moisturizing, wrapping, and sometimes rolling my hair during the week.
My biggest obstacle has been learning to manage my hair in between salon visits; which for anyone who is/has gone through this process knows it's a struggle. Working out 4-6 times a week really takes a toll on my hair. Plus, since I don't have the length I did before my last color & cut (September 2013) that adds more fuel to the fire. Nonetheless, I'm embracing the process. I'll do a follow-up around six months.
